Annual Report

July 1, 2006 ~ June 30, 2007

Message from Board Chair Person

Dear Friends of Children’s Chance,

Eleven years ago, two mothers struggling with their daughters' battles with cancer, came together to form Children's Chance.

The organization was started to fill in gaps among the current services provided for pediatric cancer patients and their families.  Since then, Children’s Chance has assisted families statewide with non-medical needs by funding a variety of programs.  The programs (listed on pages 3 & 4) address the financial, psychological, and emotional needs of the pediatric cancer patients and their families.

We must continue to increase our efforts to ensure that South Carolina families facing pediatric cancer continue to have the support that they need while fighting this dreadful disease.  Since Children’s Chance opened its doors, approximately 2,000 children have been diagnosed with cancer in our state and about 400 have died. Unfortunately, the cause of childhood cancer is largely unknown and without knowledge of how to prevent it, these figures will only continue to grow.

I want to give special thanks to all of our generous donors who continue to work with us year after year and without whom we could not be in existence.  In addition, I am so pleased and thankful for the new donors and volunteers who have joined us in our venture this year.  These new partners have implemented creative fundraising ideas and have undoubtedly included fun in fundraising.  The impact of all our donors and volunteers is monumental.

In closing, I ask you to please continue to help Children’s Chance grow.  Along with the successes of improved treatments come increased long term survivorship issues.  I firmly believe that some of these issues can be minimized through programs such as those offered by Children’s Chance while children are in treatment or shortly after their treatment.  Together we can make a difference as our family, our friends, and our neighbors many families battle against childhood cancer.

The Children’s Chance Board of Directors

The Children’s Chance Board of Directors consists of a broad mix of people who for many reasons, care passionately about children with cancer and their families.  Children’s Chance proudly maintains a board of directors with at least 51% of members being either a parent of a child with cancer, a pediatric cancer survivor, or caregiver to children with cancer. Our Board members definitely accept the realities of running a non-profit organization and have taken strong steps to continually make a difference for children and families facing pediatric cancer. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the Children’s Chance past and present Board of Directors! Please see the 2006 ~ 2007 Children’s Chance Board of Directors listed below.  For a list of current Board of Directors see page 15.

Children’s Chance Funded Programs:

Children’s Chance raises money to fund programs and provides services and resources that assist South Carolina children with cancer and their families.  These programs are administered directly through the Children’s Chance office by providing families with discretionary and angel funds, as well as programs funded by Children’s Chance at three oncology clinics throughout the state; Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and The Greenville Children’s Hospital in Greenville. We work with the staff at these clinics to ensure our funds are making a difference in the lives of these families.  Children’s Chance is the only statewide organization that offers programs that focus completely on non-medical needs for the entire family during a child’s cancer treatment and recovery.  The psychological, emotional, and financial programs we fund are critical to helping families stay intact and functional during and after a child’s cancer treatment.

Following are the programs and services Children’s Chance was able to provide during this reporting year:

Discretionary Funds, made available directly through the Children’s Chance office, help relieve the financial burden families face during a child’s cancer treatment, and allow families to “just be a family” and focus on helping their child recover.  Some examples of how these funds assist include paying mortgage bills, electric bills, car repairs, and other everyday non-medical living expenses.  Discretionary funds are available directly through the Children’s Chance office for any family in South Carolina who has a child with cancer regardless of where that child is treated.

Angel Funds, also available directly through the Children’s Chance office, provide families with immediate “out of pocket” living needs such as gas and food cards.  These funds are helpful to families who spend time in hospitals away from the comforts of home.  Angel funds allow families to travel to and from clinic appointments without the worry of paying for gas and food. Angel Funds are also available directly through the Children’s Chance office for any family in South Carolina who has a child with cancer regardless of where that child is treated.

The Ryan Crout Art Therapy Program, available through Palmetto Health’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, offers children with cancer an opportunity to express their creativity, desire for normalcy and hope, through drawing and painting.  It also provides children and their siblings a pleasant distraction from the hospital setting.

The Children’s Chance Counseling Program, provided through the Children’s Chance office, and funded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and the Lipscomb Family Foundation, pays for counseling by a certified counselor for children with cancer and their immediate families.  The purpose of this valuable program is to provide emotional support to help families manage the intensity of cancer treatment and any subsequent challenges that result from the cancer.

The Sibling Program, administered through the Children’s Hospital of the Greenville Hospital Systems, provides a support group for siblings ages 7-12, coping with a brother or sister who has been diagnosed with cancer or a blood disorder. This program allows the sibling the opportunity to express their feelings, concerns, and questions about the treatment their brother or sister is receiving.

Teen Support Programs provide a place for teens to “just be teens” during and after cancer treatment, and allows them to talk about the challenges of cancer with their peers.  Through the funding for these programs, trips like places to the beach or mountains are offered to the participants.

The following are teen support groups sponsored by Children’s Chance:

Lasting Impressions at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, SC

SCAT (Surviving Cancer All Together) at Greenville Hospital Systems in Greenville, SC

Can-Teen at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC

Bereavement Program is to provide ongoing support to the families whose children have died from cancer during the past two years.

Neuro-Oncology Clinic is to provide a comprehensive assessment of children with brain tumors.

Family Weekend is a program for children who have been diagnosed with cancer during the past two years and their families.  The program helps the families enhance their coping skills, reduce the isolation among the families and within the families, and reduce individual and family stress.

Lunch and Learn Series provides useful information to parents of children with cancer to help them develop better coping skills, and to reduce their sense of isolation.

Transition Recovery After Cancer Clinic is to provide a comprehensive assessment and educational plan for pediatric cancer survivors.

Pre-Teen Support an adolescent support group for pre-teens with cancer to relate to their peers who are going through the same thing.

Music Therapy can be used for diversion when a child is experiencing a painful procedure, to maintain/improve fine motor skills, to facilitate communication and self-expression and to bring joy and laughter to children during the course of treatment.

Community Support:

Children’s Chance continues to sponsor community events for children with cancer, their families, and the community.  Recent events sponsored by Children’s Chance include:

School Supply Bash

Children’s Chance sponsored a Back to School Bash for SC children

with cancer and their siblings. Sponsored by a grant from the Gannett

Foundation and supplies donated by the SC State Surplus Group,

Children’s Chance was excited to give out free school supplies to children

fighting cancer and their siblings just in time to start off the school year.

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

September is nationally recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness

Month.  Many local restaurants, businesses, schools, and community

organizations raised money and took time to honor or remember

children with cancer in special ways. Children’s Chance hosted a

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Ceremony at Palmetto Richland

to honor and remember those affected by pediatric cancer.

Carolina Q Cup Backyard BBQ Contest

Children’s Chance teamed up with the SC BBQ Association to

participate in the Backyard BBQ Division of the Carolina Q Cup.

Families who have a child with cancer competed by making their

own sauce and cooking chickens, to see who really had the best

backyard BBQ.
