A Little Goes A Long Way!
Kids with Cancer Need your Help Today!

Help Kids like Christopher!

Could you imagine watching your child fight cancer and worrying how you are going to pay your mortgage or electric bill?  While we all struggle in today’s economy, remember the families out there who have a child fighting cancer and make a difference in their lives.

Support your local non-profit organization, Children’s Chance and their mascot Zig the Pig, and make a difference in the lives of children fighting cancer and their families throughout South Carolina.

Children’s Chance is a non-profit organization formed on September 25, 1996 by two mothers who had daughters battling cancer. Children’s Chance assists children with cancer and their families in South Carolina with non-medical needs.

USC Giving Back Groups

Children's Chance is fortunate to work with The University of South Carolina through their Giving Back Program which is done through their Professional Development Class. Group's of students are assigned a "Giving Back Project" where they pick a charity to raise funds for. Many times groups also volunteer with the organization as well. Children's Chance usually has 2-6 groups per semester and the Public Relations Director works closely with these groups to give them Children's Chance materials, fundraising ideas, etc.

This semester Children's Chance is working with 5 groups for their Giving Back Project and some of their events are highlighted below:

Board Highlight!

Meet a Board Member

Judy Barnes

As of May 2007, Judy Barnes retired after 33 years of teaching and counseling children in Richland One. She is the mother of two adult children and the grandmother of four grandchildren.

Judy is also the wife of a cancer survivor. Her husband, Tom, was diagnosed with Stage 1 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma of the stomach lining in February 2006. After undergoing chemo and radiation, he is now in remission. The battle he fought was very long and difficult. The awareness of the physical and emotional journey that families with cancer face every day became very real.

During her school career, Judy helped parents deal with many aspects of emotional trauma with their children including divorce, abuse, death, family members dealing with cancer, and siblings with life-threatening illnesses were only some of the challenges in her work. As a counselor, she had heard of Children's Chance and knew about some of the things they supported.

"After dealing with cancer personally, I realized what a difference children would have through an organization such as Children's Chance working for them" Judy explains. "I hope by being a board member and volunteering my time, I can help families in crisis know that they are not alone. We cannot answer the why's but we can help move storm clouds away and provide some sunshine and silver linings to cloudy situations."

Recently, Judy has raised $1,450 for Children's Chance in less than 7 days through her Firstgiving page. Way to go Judy!

Judy is currently the Co-Secretary of the Children's Chance Board of Directors.

Thank you to all of the Children's Chance Board of Directors

for your continued support of families facing pediatric cancer!

Staff Highlight!

Meet our Public Relations Director

Samantha Higgins is the full-time Public Relations Director for Children’s Chance. She graduated from The University of South Carolina with a bachelor’s of arts degree in Journalism and Mass Communications with a major in Public Relations and minor in Social Work. Samantha started with Children’s Chance as an intern in January of 2004 and was hired on part time in May of 2004. As of July 1, 2005 Samantha became the full time Public Relations Director.

About Samantha
I started Children’s Chance as an intern in January of 2004. Before that I was unsure that I had chosen the right major and field of study, but positive that whatever job I took, I wanted to help people. After my first day at Children’s Chance I was convinced that I picked the perfect major and knew that I wanted to do Public Relations specifically for a non profit organization and only hoped that it could be for Children’s Chance. Now being with the organization for over 4 years, I could not be more enthusiastic to help the children we serve who are battling cancer and their families. Not only is my position at Children’s Chance a perfect way for me to utilize my public relations skills and promote such a wonderful organization, it allows me to be touched and inspired by these courageous families we serve!
