Board Highlight!

Meet a Board Member

Angela Darby

Angela Darby is currently employed as a Nurse Practitioner with Consultants in Gastroenterology. She has been an RN for 23 years and a NP for 9 years. Angela’s family has also received Children’s Chance services and she knows firsthand what families who have a child with cancer experience.

Angela is the mother to Kristen Darby, a childhood cancer survivor. In 2004 Kristen was diagnosed with AML and relapsed in 2005 to then receive a bone marrow transplant in 2006 which saved her life.

Angela explains, “As a parent of a child with cancer, my family has personally benefited from the various programs offered by Children’s Chance. It is personally rewarding and empowering to be able to help others experiencing similar challenges and hardships.”

Thank you to all of the Children's Chance Board of Directors

for your continued support of families facing pediatric cancer!

Staff Highlight!

Meet our Intern

Victoria Senn
Summer 2009 Intern

Victoria Senn is a young pre-medical student who lives in Columbia.  She has personal experience with pediatric cancer when her cousin, Stefen, was diagnosed with cancer.  She helped with respite care and giving medication through his port-a-cathe.  Victoria had always known that she wanted to be a doctor but didn't know which field.  After Stefen was diagnosed with cancer she decided to pursue her MD in Pediatric Oncology.  Victoria has volunteered since she was 12 years old.  She began volunteering as a helper in an office for people with disabilities, then became the office assistant during summers.  Victoria has volunteered for Children's Chance for the past four years and is excited to start as an intern this summer.  Some of you may have already met  Victoria who is DeeAnn's niece.

About Children's Chance Internships:

Children’s Chance works with local colleges to provide internships to students in the areas of public relations, advertising, marketing, non-profit business and any other applicable field.

Over the years, Children’s Chance has been fortunate to work with schools such as The University of South Carolina, Columbia College, Midlands Technical College, Presbyterian College, and others, to utilize interns to help our organization in a variety of areas including event planning, assisting with fundraisers, public relations, media outreach, marketing, advertising, programs for our families, and assisting with running the office.

Children’s Chance provides internships for credit and works with schools to be sure that students meet the expectations required of the internship program at their particular school. Children’s Chance also offers internships to students who are seeking to gain experience and further their academic and professional careers. The Public Relations Director generally is the supervisor of the interns at Children’s Chance.

Children’s Chance generally offers two internships per semester and is excited to welcome aboard our Summer 2009 Intern, Victoria Senn.
