Local Celebrities help Rally Golfers and Raise Funds

The 10^th Annual Billy Mill Golf Classic benefiting Children’s Chance, a huge success!

May 22, 2007 – Lexington, SC:  The 10^th Annual Billy Mill Charity Golf Classic sponsored by The Junior Woman’s Club of Lexington and the Mill Family, to benefit Children’s Chance, was held on Monday, May 21, 2007 at The Country Club of Lexington located at 1066 Barr Road in Lexington, SC.  George Rogers, the 1980 Heisman Trophy winner from USC, and David Mobley, the World Longest Drive Champion, assisted the Mill family in raising about $60,000 to help children with cancer and their families in South Carolina.

George Rogers was on hand to “out drive” the golfers and raise some extra cash for Children’s Chance. Mr. Rogers has been an avid supporter of the Billy Mill Golf Tournament over the past 10 years and knows the devastation cancer can bring on a family, as he is a good friend of the Mill family who lost their father to cancer over ten years ago. George took some time out to pose for pictures and show onlookers his Heisman Trophy. Stuart Morgan, father of a child with cancer, and Children’s Chance Board Member explains, “I was honored to have my picture taken with this USC football legend. He is a great guy. Everyone had a great time, and the money raised will go a long way toward helping families across South Carolina who are struggling to deal with the hardships of pediatric cancer”.

David Mobley, the World’s Longest Drive Champion, was also on hand to lend his support and help kids like Joel Romero. David took a few minutes between swings to encourage pediatric cancer survivor Joel Romero and he shared some golf tees and tips with the 9 year old who is an 8 year cancer survivor. Mr. Mobley was quite impressed to see Joel, who is paralyzed in both legs from the knees down, hit a golf ball over 200 yards.

Children’s Chance is a non-profit organization dedicated to meeting the financial, psychological, and emotional needs of South Carolina children and families affected by pediatric cancer.  Proceeds from the Billy Mill Golf Classic will fund a variety of programs including Discretionary Funds which provide financial assistance for non-medical bills, Angel Funds which provide gas and food cards, Counseling, Teen Support Groups, and Special Events, to assist these families during their child’s cancer diagnosis, treatment, and hopefully recovery.  For more information about the 10^th annual Billy Mill Golf Classic or Children’s Chance, please contact Samantha Higgins at (803) 254-5996 or visit www.childrenschance.org.
