The Family
Weekend Retreat is a program for children who have been diagnosed
with cancer during the past two years and their families. The
retreat is held once a year in the Fall. It begins on Friday
afternoon and concludes on Sunday morning.
Recognizing that
the diagnosis of cancer in a child is a crisis for the entire
family, the focus of this program is to provide psychosocial support
and education to all the members of the family. The goals for the
weekend are (1) to enhance family coping, (2) to reduce isolation
among the families and within the family system, and (3) to reduce
individual and family stress. To achieve these goals, a variety of
educational and recreational opportunities are offered in a retreat
setting.
This program is offered at the
Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Clinic at Palmetto Health
Richland.
