Lunch & Learn Series....

When children are diagnosed with cancer, many parents are overwhelmed by the medical side of the diagnosis.  Many times they don’t have time to research resources, talk to other parents, or learn to deal with the stress.  These parents are asked to make life alternating decisions about their child’s life.  The program will assist these parents in learning how to deal with many aspects of being a parent of a child with a life threatening disease.  Parents of children with cancer have many questions and concerns.  It is a time of uncertainty and anxiety as they face many new challenges.

The Lunch and Learn Series gives these parents information about a number of topics and provides them the opportunity to get to know other parents who are facing similar circumstances.

The sessions for this series are:

Working with your School

Having a child with cancer and working with your school can be a learning process.  Join us as we discuss Medical Homebound Services and the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) process.  We will teach you what the schools responsibilities are, what services you can request and how to protect the rights of your child.

Disciplining a sick child

Disciplining a child is never easy but how do you discipline a child who has endured so much?  Learn techniques to use to ensure that your child behaves even when they are receiving treatment.

Learning to Relax

Relaxing while your child faces cancer can be difficult.  This session will offer chair massages in a soothing atmosphere.  During this relaxing time, the participants and moderator will discuss ways to relax at home or while you are in the hospital.

How your medical crisis becomes a tax deduction

Do you realize that not just your medical coverage and out of pocket doctor visits are covered under IRS regulations? You can also deduct prescriptions, appropriate mileage, overnight visits and meals while obtaining medical treatment. You can also deduct many other common items that you would have never thought possible. Taking a few moments is all it takes to acquire the knowledge necessary to make this year’s tax season easier and affordable with all of your out of pocket health related expenses.

The Lunch & Learn Series will be held at or near Palmetto Health Richland, Greenville Hospital Systems and The Medical University of South Carolina.
