When a child is diagnosed with
cancer or blood disorders the entire family goes through a life
changing experience. Music therapy is a form of emotional,
physical, and psychosocial expression of emotions. Music can
work where there are no words for children to express feelings.
Through these activities a child may be able to
find or create words and actions for their feelings. Music can be
used for diversion when a child is experiencing a painful procedure,
to maintain/improve fine motor skills, to facilitate communication
and self-expression and to bring joy and laughter to children during
the course of treatment. Whether a child is receiving outpatient
therapy or inpatient treatments, music and play activities are very
important in the healing process.
This program is offered at the
Children's Cancer and Blood Disorders Clinic at Palmetto Health
Richland.
