The
School Supply Bash is an
opportunity for children with cancer and their siblings to shop for
free school supplies. The event is held for one day three
weeks prior to school beginning. Families are requested to sign up
prior to the event so that enough supplies will be available for all
children that are attending. The supplies range from crayons, to
notebook paper and binders or locker supplies. The variety of
supplies provided is a way to help every child go back to school
prepared.
The
School Supply Bash also offers lunch to all participants. This is
an opportunity for the parents to meet and interact with other
parents who are dealing with many of the same issues. The Bash is a
way for parents to learn from other parents and to start a network
of support.
The
School Supply Bash is a needed project. Parents of children with
cancer are often young, have a limited income, and they have other
children. One parent often needs to give up a job to take care of
their child being treated for cancer. Many families are struggling
financially. With the slowing economy and rising gas prices the
families are unable to purchase the supplies needed to prepare all
of their children for school. The School Supply Bash is also a way
to help siblings feel important. Many siblings feel left out and
isolated when the child with cancer receives so much attention.
Three School
Supply Bashes will be held in July 2009 at or near Palmetto Health
Richland, Greenville Hospital Systems and The Medical University of
South Carolina.
