Zig Goes to School

Zig the Pig is a rewarding service learning project for your school.  Zig helps care for families in South Carolina who face pediatric cancer. When Zig goes to school, he teaches compassion, health and community involvement.  He helps students experience the powerful feeling that comes from helping others.  Zig wants to help! No matter where Zig goes, he’s always thinking about his children who have cancer and their families.

Why should your school choose Zig?

Zig is designed to be a fun AND easy service-learning project.  After your school agrees to adopt Zig, the in-house coordinator will receive a tool kit containing materials such as: Zig’s adoption papers, informative letters for teachers and parents, Zig’s song, fundraising ideas and new this year…sample lesson plans which will enhance the book’s values of compassion and respecting others. During the adoption, each teacher will receive their own Ziggybank and Zig Goes to School book to keep throughout the campaign.  Children's Chance will give three complementary copies of Zig Goes to School to the library at the end of the campaign.  Reuse of the Ziggybanks and books will help Children's Chance give more funds to the families they serve!

Through his book Zig Goes to School, Zig tells his story about cancer, the importance of friendship and giving back to your community. Zig Goes To School seeks to help kids understand the following:

  • Relate to others who are different

  • Learn to love and accept people with differences
  • Know what cancer is and learn ways to relate to someone with cancer or another illness
  • Perform acts of kindness and giving
  • Learn ways they can help others in need

How does Zig use the money collected?

The monies raised through a Zig Adoption remain in South Carolina for South Carolina families.  The school receipts collected go directly to the families in the form of programs.

When can we adopt Zig?

School adoptions may take place any time during the year that works best with your school calendar.  Schools may become official Zigkeepers by adopting Zig through the “Feed Zig Campaign.”  You may choose the length and date of the campaign to best suit your school’s environment.

Zig the Pig’s service learning project is so easy you don’t have to count the money collected.  Simply separate coins, currency and checks then place in the provided bags and we’ll have it counted for you.

Who do we contact to find out more?

To have someone talk with your school, student government, administration, guidance counselor or PTA/PTO club, please contact Children's Chance at 803-254-5996 or zigthepig@childrenschance.org

SCHOOLS ZIG HAS VISITED

What Educators Have to Say about Zig Adoptions.

Penny Pope – School Counselor
Oakland Elementary
Inman, South Carolina

"Zig the Pig is an outstanding fundraiser! Our students absolutely loved every minute of the campaign. The Zig story is so well written and really helps the children understand the difficulties of dealing with cancer.  The Ziggybanks and bracelets are an adorable addition to the fundraiser.  Everything is geared to appeal to young students, which helped involve and interest everyone.  Our school coordinator was fabulous in assisting our fundraising efforts.  She made many trips to our school to bring additional supplies at a moments notice!  We would not have been so successful without her excellent support.  Finally, your website is also an outstanding resource for students, parents and teachers.  We printed the web address in our school newsletter to allow family members at home the opportunity to be informed and participate, too.  Of course the most valuable lesson our students learned from participating in the Zig fundraiser was that giving generously to help others is a wonderful way to feel good about ourselves. Thank you for providing the materials needed to make our holiday fundraiser one that the children will remember for years to come."

Barbara Hicks – School Counselor
Satchel Ford Elementary
Columbia, South Carolina

Zig the Pig helped Satchel Ford Elementary School deal with the news that one of our fourth grade students had cancer.  We even changed the name of the campaign to Zig for Zack in honor of the student.  In eight days we raised over $4,000, which gave us all a sense of hope during a time of feeling helpless.

Zig raised all of our spirits!”

Suzanne Ridings – School Counselor
Boiling Springs Elementary
Boiling Springs, South Carolina

Zig the Pig was a wonderful addition to our school and Red Ribbon Week Celebration!  The students were able to learn the importance of caring for someone who is sick with cancer while simultaneously learning the importance of making good choices.  The wonderful character traits in the Zig Goes to School storybook reinforced skills students need to know to stay drug free!!”

Rhonda Barnes – School Counselor
Rosewood Elementary
Columbia, South Carolina

"Zig was a hit at Rosewood during our Peace Month celebration. We collected 'Pennies for Peace' to donate to Zig. Students loved feeding Zig in their classrooms. Zig's story is so heartfelt and full of empathy and caring. Children's lives revolve so much around them, and Zig's story helps them to think outside of their world and hopefully develop empathy for others."

"Students were 'caught being kind' during the month by teachers. Zig’s Kind Kids were announced each morning, their names were posted on the bulletin board, and they were given a Kind Kid sticker and a Zig pencil. Zig is a great symbol of kindness, caring, and a great tool for developing empathy skills."

Zig in the Community

Who is Zig the Pig?

Zig the Pig, the lovable, zebra-striped little fellow,  brings help and hope to children with cancer and their families all over South Carolina.  Zig promotes pediatric cancer awareness and education, teaches children to give back to their communities, and funds non-medical, direct needs for families in South Carolina facing this devastating disease.  Zig raises money to educate the community about pediatric cancer and to assist families facing pediatric cancer with non-medical needs.

Zig joins a Club

There are so many ways community organizations and individuals can help Zig. Here are some examples:

    • Invite a Zig team member to speak at a meeting. We’d love to tell you what we’re doing and how you can help Zig the Pig.

    • Pass Ziggybanks around at a meeting so you can feed Zig your pocket change - remember, I really like greens!

    • Host a one-time fundraiser, such as a bake sale, car wash, or donut sale

    • Adopt as beneficiary for year (pass Zig around at meetings or fill "slop buckets" with change at every meeting).

    • Sell Paper Zigs through local businesses or through the club.
    • Engage another club in competition to determine who can raise the most funds for kids with cancer (sorority vs. sorority, Lexington chapter vs. Columbia chapter, etc.)
    • Volunteer to become an official Zigwearer - a chance to don my costume and perform
    • Email volunteer opportunities for Zig to your membership.

Zig goes to Church

    • Youth groups can adopt Zig. You can give your donation in honor or memory of a child, a friend or family member who's been affected by cancer.
    • Pass a Ziggybank around your Sunday school class or bible study. Even once can mean a big donation!
    • Feature Zig at a Wednesday night supper. I can present a program for attendees about how to support families with cancer.
    • Host a Kids Karnival with your youth group.
    • Purchase Zig storybooks for the youth of your church, especially if there is a child in the congregation who has been diagnosed with cancer.

Zig Goes to Work

Who is Zig?

Zig the Pig, the lovable, zebra-striped little fellow,  brings help and hope to children with cancer and their families all over South Carolina.  Zig promotes pediatric cancer awareness and education, teaches children to give back to their communities, and funds non-medical, direct needs for families in South Carolina facing this devastating disease.  Zig raises money to educate the community about pediatric cancer and to assist families facing pediatric cancer with non-medical needs.

How does Zig use the money collected?

Monies raised support the mission of Zig the Pig Zig promotes pediatric cancer education and awareness in the community, giving both children and adults a better understanding of what a family goes through as they battle this devastating disease and how they can help.  Zig also helps families with their non-medical, direct needs through the Children’s Chance programs.

How can we help Zig?

Corporations and businesses can get involved and help Zig the Pig in several different ways that include: Zig adoptions, one or two-day blitzes, making a contribution, becoming a sponsor, or donating an in-kind product or service.
During a
Zig adoption, the Zig team brings Ziggybanks to the office for employees to adopt. Each “Zigkeeper” will receive special instructions on how to care for their Ziggybanks. It's simple, fun and costs no money for your company to participate!

For a Zig Blitz, your company can choose a day or two to raise money for Zig without adopting Ziggybanks. Some ideas for a blitz include:

  • Jeans Day — employees pays $3-5 to wear jeans to work
  • Boxed Lunches — work with a restaurant to sell lunches where a portion of the proceeds is donated to Zig the Pig
  • Raffle — raffle off an item employees would love, like an extra vacation day or a special parking spot
  • Car Wash — select managers and VP’s to wash cars for donations
  • Ice Cream Social — buy lots of ice cream (Zig’s favorite) and sell ice cream cones on a hot summer day.

If you own a small business or chain store such as a retail shop or restaurant, there are many ways you can help Zig. You could organize a special event or after hours sale and designate a portion of the sales to benefit Zig. You could offer an add-on for a customer to add a donation to Zig onto their bill. Another idea is to sell a specific product and designate a portion of the profits to Zig (anything zebra-striped or black and white works especially well!) When you help Zig, we can help you promote these events to the public!

Zig especially needs corporate sponsors to fund his programs.  They allow him to raise awareness of pediatric cancer, thereby helping raise incremental funds to help families facing this devastating disease.

In-kind support also helps reduce operational costs so that more funds can be used to support his mission. If you have a product or service you’d like to donate, or if you’d like to make a contribution or become a corporate sponsor, please contact Children's Chance at childrenschance@childrenschance.org  or 803-254-5996.

Who coordinates Zig in our company?

A Zig Coordinator will meet with the appropriate personnel to determine the ways in which to best organize the adoption program within your company.

FAQs

  1. After our corporate adoption campaign has ended, can I buy my ziggybank?
Zig is very flattered you think he is so cute. He just loves compliments. However, he has a very limited number of ziggybanks to use in adoptions; therefore, we are unable to offer ziggybanks for sale.

  2. I adopted a ziggbank yesterday at my corporation's adoption day. I did not realize how easy it is to participate. Is it possible for me to adopt a few more?
